Your degree is “LMFT.” What does that mean?: LMFT stands for “licensed marriage and family therapist.” I have a master's degree in counseling, with instruction in relationship therapy. Post graduation, I received several years of training from an approved supervisor in marriage counseling and family therapy. I have also passed a national exam to qualify for licensure.
Do you also work with individuals? Yes! I work with individuals, as well as couples and families. Relationship issues contribute to so many mental health challenges. As an individual, working with a relationship counselor can help encourage positive social and emotional health.
What age groups do you work with? I work with teens and adults.
Do you have a specific theoretical orientation that you follow? My orientation is eclectic. I apply a model that is most effective to work with each individual/couple/family.
My partner does not want to attend couples therapy. What should I do? I acknowledge that not everyone wants to attend therapy! I take a balanced approach and listen to each partner equally. I suggest attending an initial session in which we talk about reservations and determine if we can work together.
What about teens? Will parents be involved in sessions? At 14, teens get to be in charge of who is involved in sessions, based on ethical guidelines. Sessions are confidential. If issues involve caregivers, I will work with clients to determine how they will be involved.
Autism Spectrum. Do you have experience? Yes. I have worked in home-based therapy with children and teens on the spectrum. I have supported many children, teens and adults in outpatient therapy as they work on issues of social communication. As a relationship counselor, I can help explain unwritten social rules to those who may benefit from input.
Where did you go to school? I have a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from La Salle University in Philadelphia, a COAMFTE accredited program. I also have an undergraduate degree and master's degree in education, both from the University of Pennsylvania.
How long is each session? Appointments last approximately 50 minutes.
Do I have to come each week? This is up to you! Some clients meet weekly, some every other week, some check in monthly, and beyond. I try to be very flexible in scheduling.
